    Voodoo - a vector algebra for portable database performance on modern hardware

    In-memory databases require careful tuning and many engineering tricks to achieve good performance. Such database performance engineering is hard: a plethora of data and hardware-dependent optimization techniques form a design space that is difficult to navigate for a skilled engineer --- even more so for a query compiler. To facilitate performance-oriented design exploration and query plan compilation, we present Voodoo, a declarative intermediate algebra that abstracts the detailed architectural properties of the hardware, such as multi- or many-core architectures, caches and SIMD registers, without losing the ability to generate highly tuned code. Because it consists of a collection of declarative, vector-oriented operations, Voodoo is easier to reason about and tune than low-level C and related hardware-focused extensions (Intrinsics, OpenCL, CUDA, etc.). This enables our Voodoo compiler to produce (OpenCL) code that rivals and even outperforms the fastest state-of-the-art in memory databases for both GPUs and CPUs. In addition, Voodoo makes it possible to express techniques as diverse as cache-conscious processing, predication and vectorization (again on both GPUs and CPUs) with just a few lines of code. Central to our approach is a novel idea we termed control vectors, which allows a code generating frontend to expose parallelism to the Voodoo compiler in a abstract manner, enabling portable performance across hardware platforms. We used Voodoo to build an alternative backend for MonetDB, a popular open-source in-memory database. Our backend allows MonetDB to perform at the same level as highly tuned in-memory databases, including HyPeR and Ocelot.     Conformal Transformations of the Wigner Function and Solutions of the Quantum Corrected Vlasov Equation

    We study conformal properties of the quantum kinetic equations in curved spacetime. A transformation law for the covariant Wigner function under conformal transformations of a spacetime is derived by using the formalism of tangent bundles. The conformal invariance of the quantum corrected Vlasov equation is proven. This provides a basis for generating new solutions of the quantum kinetic equations in the presence of gravitational and other external fields. We use our method to find explicit quantum corrections to the class of locally isotropic distributions, to which equilibrium distributions belong. We show that the quantum corrected stress--energy tensor for such distributions has, in general, a non--equilibrium structure. Local thermal equilibrium is possible in quantum systems only if an underlying spacetime is conformally static (not stationary). Possible applications of our results are discussed.Comment: 30 page

    Glandular sources of pheromones used to control host workers (Apis mellifera scutellata) by socially parasitic workers of Apis mellifera capensis

    Pheromonal control by the honey bee queen is achieved through the use of secretions from diverse glandular sources, but the use of pheromones from a variety of glandular sources by reproductively dominant workers, has not previously been explored. Using the social parasite, Apis mellifera capensis clonal worker we studied the diversity of glandular sources used for pheromonal control of reproductively subordinate A. m. scutellata workers. To determine whether pheromones from different glandular sources are used by reproductively active workers to achieve dominance and evaluate the degree of pheromonal competition between workers of the two sub-species, we housed groups of workers of the two sub-species together in cages and analysed mandibular and tergal gland secretions as well as, ovarian activation status of each worker after 21 days. The results showed that A. m. capensis invasive clones used both mandibular and tergal gland secretions to achieve reproductive dominance and suppress ovarian activation in their A. m. scutellata host workers. The reproductively dominant workers (false queens) produced more queen-like pheromones and inhibited ovarian activation in subordinate A. m. scutellata workers. These results show that tergal gland pheromones working in synergy with pheromones from other glands allow individual workers (false queens) to establish reproductive dominance within these social groups and to act in a manner similar to that of queens.     Tergal gland components of reproductively dominant honey bee workers have both primer and releaser effects on subordinate workers

    The primer and releaser effects of dominant honey bee workers’ tergal gland pheromones are not known under queenless conditions. The Cape honey bee, Apis mellifera capensis, is the ideal model to investigate such question since workers normally reproductively dominate workers of all other subspecies. We determined the effects that short- and long-term exposure to pheromone blends from dominant A. m. capensis workers had on subordinate workers of A. m. scutellata. Three putative pheromonal blends, 1 (palmitic acid, oleic acid, n-heneicosene and n-tricosene), 2 (ethyl palmitate, ethyl oleate and ethyl stearate) and 3 (mixture of blends 1 + 2), were tested. All the three putative pheromonal blends elicited releaser effects in the form of retinue formation and primer effects by suppressing ovarian activation in workers.     Effects of age and reproductive status on tergal gland secretions in queenless honey bee workers, Apis mellifera scutellata and A. m. capensis

    Secretions from tergal glands are part of a queen’s pheromonal control of worker reproduction in honey bees. However, in queenless honey bee colonies, workers compete to gain pheromonal, and hence reproductive dominance, over nestmates with ontogenetic changes in their glandular secretions that affect the behavioral or physiological responses of other individuals. Using gas chromatography/mass spectrometry, we investigated for the first time the age-dependent changes in tergal gland secretions of queenless workers of the clonal lineage of Apis mellifera capensis and workers of A. m. scutellata. The reproductive status of honey bee workers was determined by recording the presence of spermathecae and the level of ovarian activation. The tergal gland chemicals identified in both A. m. scutellata workers and A. m. capensis clone workers were oleic acid, n-tricosene, n-pentacosene, and n-heptacosene, with three additional compounds, palmitic acid, n-heneicosene, and n-nonacosene, in A. m. capensis clones.We report ethyl esters as new compounds from honey bee worker tergal gland profiles; these compounds increased in amount with age. All A. m. capensis clone workers dissected had spermathecae and showed ovarian activation from day 4, while ovarian activation only started on day 7 for A. m. scutellata workers that had no spermathecae. Tergal gland secretions were present in higher quantities in bees with activated, rather than inactive ovaries.     Insights from the STICH trial: Change in left ventricular size after coronary artery bypass grafting with and without surgical ventricular reconstruction

    ObjectiveThe present analysis of the Surgical Treatment for Ischemic Heart Failure randomized trial data examined the left ventricular volumes at baseline and 4 months after surgery to determine whether any magnitude of postoperative reduction in end-systolic volume affected survival after coronary artery bypass grafting alone compared with bypass grafting plus surgical ventricular reconstruction.MethodsOf the 1000 patients randomized, 555 underwent an operation and had a paired imaging assessment with the same modality at baseline and 4 months postoperatively. Of the remaining 455 patients, 424 either died before the 4-month study or did not have paired imaging tests and were excluded, and 21 were not considered because they had died before surgery or did not receive surgery.ResultsSurgical ventricular reconstruction resulted in improved survival compared with coronary artery bypass grafting alone when the postoperative end-systolic volume index was 70 mL/m2 or less. However, the opposite was true for patients achieving a postoperative volume index greater than 70 mL/m2. A reduction in the end-systolic volume index of 30% or more compared with baseline was an infrequent event in both treatment groups and did not produce a statistically significant survival benefit with ventricular reconstruction.ConclusionsIn patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting plus surgical ventricular reconstruction, a survival benefit was realized compared with bypass alone, with the achievement of a postoperative end-systolic volume index of 70 mL/m2 or less. Extensive ventricular remodeling at baseline might limit the ability of ventricular reconstruction to achieve a sufficient reduction in volume and clinical benefit

    Search for Relativistic Magnetic Monopoles with IceCube

    We present the first results in the search for relativistic magnetic monopoles with the IceCube detector, a subsurface neutrino telescope located in the South Polar ice cap containing a volume of 1 km3^{3}. This analysis searches data taken on the partially completed detector during 2007 when roughly 0.2 km3^{3} of ice was instrumented. The lack of candidate events leads to an upper limit on the flux of relativistic magnetic monopoles of \Phi_{\mathrm{90%C.L.}}\sim 3\e{-18}\fluxunits for β≥0.8\beta\geq0.8. This is a factor of 4 improvement over the previous best experimental flux limits up to a Lorentz boost γ\gamma below 10710^{7}.
